What are the two common types of skin impurities?

Before I talk about the different types of skin impurities, let’s discuss the anatomy of the skin. First, it is important to note that the skin is the largest organ of the body divided into three parts. Those three parts include the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. It is important to note as the largest human organ it is an ever-changing organ that contains many specialized cells and structures. However, the primary function of the skin is to act as a protective barrier towards the external environment. Other functions the skin provides include regulating body temperature and gathers sensory information.

The outermost layer of the skin is the epidermis. The important thing to note about the epidermis is regarding the top layer, the startum corneum. The startum corneum is made of dead, flat skin cells that shed about every two weeks.

The dermis is the second portion of the skin anatomy. It is divided into two layers which include the papillary and reticular layers. The upper layer is the papillary layer which contains the thin arrangement of collagen fibers. The lower layer is the reticular layer which is thicker and made of thick collagen fibers that are arranged parallel to the surface of the skin. Important things to note about the dermis, regarding specialized cells and structures, include: hair follicles being situated here, sweat glands, blood vessels and nerves course through this layer.

The final layer and the innermost layer of the skin is the hypodermis. This layer is responsible for storing fat cells that act as an energy reserve and acts as a heat insulator.

Many skin impurities will be visible on the epidermis. The two impurity types we will discuss include acne and clogged pores.

Skin Impurities – Acne

Medically known as Acne Vulgaris it is a skin disease that involves the oil glands at the base of their follicles. It is not dangerous, but it can leave the skin scars. It starts at puberty that can affect all races and all ages. In fact, three – quarters of 11 to 30 year – olds will get acne at some time. Though we know what involves acne there is no exact reason why acne arises. Experts believe that the primary reason is a rise in androgen levels. Androgen is a hormone that rises when a human becomes an adolescent. Rising androgen levels make the oil glands under your skin grow; hence producing more oil.

Skin Impurities – Clogged Pores

Clogged pores can lead towards blemishes and acne. Clogged pores start to occur when a human reaches puberty when hormonal changes stimulate oil production. There is a gland underneath the skin that is called the sebaceous glands. These glands act as a glue to expel dead skin cells which are excreted through the pores of our body. This helps to maintain healthy skin. When the glands expel these dead skin cells, build – up can occur and pores can clog. Hence, it is important to be careful with certain cosmetics, cleansers, lotions and clothing all of which can encourage clogged pores.

Skin Impurities – An Organic Solution

The solutions to preventing acne or other impurities would be to the wash the face, eat healthy and use over-the-counter skin treatment products. The first two should be easy, but nevertheless oil will be excreted through the skin still causing these problems. It seems that these impurities can arise no matter what we do; hence, people turn towards over – the – counter acne products to solve their skin problems. However, the ingredients in many acne products have benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid which all curb bacteria and dry the skin. Furthermore, these ingredients can be harmful to sensitive skin.
