Malnourishment in America – End the Hunger

Are you hungry?

I am sure that we have all felt that uneasy or painful sensation for a want of food resulting in a strong craving. It is a natural function for the body to signal towards our bodies that it needs food. Sometimes, that hunger signal towards the brain isn’t just a result of starvation; but rather, the result of over eating. The difference between over eating and starvation is the lack of nutrients that one receives when they are malnourished. There are two basic types of malnutrition. The first type of malnutrition is protein – energy malnutrition, or PEM. This type of malnutrition basically happens when there is a lack of calories and protein. When world hunger is discussed it refers to this malnutrition type. The second type of malnutrition is micronutrient – vitamin and mineral – deficiency.

When we talk about the global scale regarding malnutrition, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world, or one in eight, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2010 – 2012. Many of these places that had severe malnourishment were underdeveloped countries such as Africa or countries in Latin America – to name a few. These countries lacked the agriculture or technology to help feed their populations.
Though many underdeveloped countries suffered malnourishment, it still greatly affects America despite the technological advancements in America. One must keep in mind that as long as there is poverty, natural disasters, political problems and war there will be always be a malnourishment epidemic. Sadly, America is involved with all these causes.

Upon closer inspection of the hunger epidemic in America, more than 30 million Americans experience hunger regularly, or are at risk of going hungry, according to the Child Welfare League of America. Human beings that are affected the most are children.

Some 13 million American children live in homes with limited access to food. Furthermore, one in three children receive food assistance via the food stamp program called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – stated by Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. Along with children, those that can’t afford food will rely upon food banks and church – sponsored hot meal programs to survive.

Those children that survive every day by just receiving the minimal nourishment tend to have a harder time adjusting to their surroundings. In fact, children who are malnourished are more vulnerable to illnesses and infection. According to Louisiana State University, children who are malnourished don’t do as well in school while displaying higher levels of aggression, hyperactivity and anxiety.

Reflect back to the malnourishment epidemic, the one cause of ending the hunger that we control is poverty.
