Gillette
– A Brief History
Their slogan: “Gillette the best a man can get” is a
well known slogan that has been used as a quotation to identify the brand. The
vision made by one man named King C. Gillette began when he wanted precision in
every shave. The vision inspired the company to keep looking for ways to make
sure that they keep making razors better. In fact on their Web site, they
stated that Gillette will stop making razors until can’t make them any better.
Their dedication to quality and perfection of the
razor started back in 1900. Mr. Gillette had the idea that he wanted to create
thin, disposable blades that were strong and durable. During that time, it was
deemed impossible to forge that concept as stated by MIT – trained scientists.
However in 1901, he’d proven them wrong when he came out with his breakthrough
innovation.
The next inspired innovation involved twin blades
called the Gillette Trac II. This helped to create fewer shaves thus lowering
the amount of nicks or cuts while shaving. Gillette revolutionized the shaving
industry yet again when they introduced the pivoting head. Gillette called this
product the Atra/Contour system. This system followed the contours of the face
for a closer shave.
Other innovations that followed included the
lubrication strip and the Mach 3 – a three blade razor – providing an even
closer shave. Presently, the most current innovation in shaving is the Gillette
Fusion Proglide with Flexball Technology Razor. This ball is made to pivot in
every direction ensuring that it maximizes contact with every contour of a
man’s face.
Over the years, Gillette not only revolutionized the
shaving industry with razors but their product line included shaving creams,
after shave and body washes. They were designed to provide a sense of cleanliness
while ensuring a smoother, closer shave. Though their razors were made to
provide closer shaves with fewer nicks and burns, one must wonder whether
Gillette provided any thought into their shaving cream which comes with harmful
ingredients.

“Rinse and lather the foam onto your face” as many
Gillette shaving cream bottles would say. But, upon further inspection of the product
Foamy Regular: Gillette’s ingredients it can make one wonder why Gillette
didn’t take into consideration the safety of the product. When I look at this Gillette
shaving cream product, I recognize that there are at least three harmful
ingredients. The three harmful ingredients are as listed:
Triethanolamine
–
Better known as TEA it is an emulsifying agent meaning it helps keep the oil
and water from separating. The reason why it is harmful is due to the skin
irritation, but more importantly many formulas containing TEA are contaminated
with nitrosamines which are linked to cancer.
Sodium
Laureth Sulphate – This ingredient causes the great lather
experienced when shaving, but it also causes health implications. The lauryl
mimics estrogen, which is problematic for women, and laureth often hosts a
known carcinogen called dioxane.
Fragrance
–
This gives the specific scent of the product, but it also provides problems.
Along with fragrance is that it is associated with the toxic chemical called
phthalates. Phtalates can act as a obesogens – known to cause obesity – which
can disrupt normal reproductive health. It disrupts normal reproductive health
through developmental defects and delays.
Shaving
Cream – Choosing the Right Cream
Make sure that when you’re choosing a shaving cream
that you do your research on the ingredients that can harm your health. And,
ask yourself the Gillette slogan “will this product be the best that a man can
get?”
If the ingredients say otherwise, then it would mean
that the product isn’t giving you the “best” that you deserve. The best type of
cream is to choose one that has organic ingredients, and allows the consumer to
“go green”. The reason why going green is better for you and the environment is
